What is the Troop 109 Bottle & Can Drive?
For well over 20 years, Troop 109 has conducted a monthly drive for returnable bottles and cans in the town of Millbury. This provides a recycling opportunity for the local community and at the same time the program teaches the boys the value of working as a team, and the value of being rewarded for their hard work.
A rotating work schedule for the scouts is made out for a 3 month period. Your son may be scheduled for 1-2 Tuesdays & Fridays and 1-3 Saturdays each rotation. The troop has a recently refurbished trailer at the town transfer station (dump) for the residents to deposit their returnable bottles and cans. On Fridays the trailer is dropped off in front of the Scout Hall garage and it takes about 1 hour to empty it, no sorting is done at this time. The second Saturday of each month scouts and parents work at the scout hall garage to again empty the trailer, sort & count the cans, and to allow the residents an additional drop off point. Saturday sorting generally takes about takes 3-4 hours.
When a scout goes on a trip his expenses are taken from the proceeds of the can drive. We ask the parents to give their time and help out whenever your son works. Remember, the proceeds from the can drive defray your son’s expenses and in most cases the parents pay very little to nothing for the Troop camping trips and activities. If any boy leaves the troop, the monies from the can account, as with all fund raising proceeds stay with Troop 109 because they are raised for the benefit of scouting.
General Can Drive Guidelines
It is VERY important that each scout fulfill his obligations with the can and bottle drive. Your fellow scouts and the adults are depending on you to do your duty. If you cannot make an assignment, it is YOUR responsibility to get someone to cover for you. All money from the cans goes to fund troop camping trips, activities, ranks, merit badges, awards, troop equipment, etc.
- There MUST be an adult present at all can functions, Tuesdays, Fridays & Saturdays.
- Tuesdays & Fridays - this lasts about an hour - it is expected at least one parent stays.
- Saturdays - usually lasts 3-4 hours, possibly more - parents must be present during the entire process. Please check the latest Can Schedule.
Guidelines for Emptying the Can Trailer on Tuesdays & Fridays
The trailer is there by 3PM on Friday and is moved to the dump the next morning at 7AM. There are 2 boys assigned and it should take less than an hour to empty the trailer - each boy gets one hour of credit. The boys should work out a time to do the cans and all show up together. If someone doesn't show or someone changes places, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO MARK IT ON THE SCHEDULE AND NOTIFY MRS. MAGNANT IMMEDIATELY.
Make sure the cans are in the bin, the glass bottles are in the containers, the area inside and outside is clean, and the doors are locked when you leave.
Guidelines for Sorting the Cans/Bottles on Saturday
There are 5-6 boys and 2-3 parents assigned for Saturdays. The starting time is 8AM and it usually takes 3-4 hours to complete. Glass and plastic bottles are counted, sorted and bagged, glass bottles are counted and boxed, and everything is taken to the recycling location (Lenny's). It is important that everyone shows up - on time - and does a good job. Boys get the actual number of hours worked. Again, we need to make sure the area (inside and outside) is clean when you leave.
